Used & Waste Tire Recycling

Proper maintenance is the key to longer life for tires and reduces the number of tires being thrown away. The Rubber Manufacturers Association recommends:

  • Checking tire air pressure (when tires are cool) at least once a month and before every long trip.
  • Checking tires for signs of uneven wear monthly. Uneven wear patterns may be caused by improper inflation pressures, misalignment, improper balance or suspension neglect.
  • Regularly rotating your tires and checking tire alignment following the schedules in the vehicle owner's manual or every 5,000 miles.
  • Following the manufacturer's vehicle loading recommendations, including baggage carried on top of any vehicle and towing trailers.

Tire Disposal & Recycling

Proper disposal of old tires is important because leaving tires laying around poses a danger to public health and safety. Tires are a fire hazard and they can become a breeding ground for rodents and insects.

Used and waste tires can be taken to either of the two local transfer stations for recycling (call for fee structure):

  • Recology Yuba-Sutter Transfer Station
    3001 North Levee Rd.
    Marysville, CA
    (530) 743-6933
    Hours: 7:00 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Sunday
  • Ponderosa Transfer Station
    Ponderosa Way
    Brownsville, CA
    (530) 743-6933
Hours: 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM, Saturday, Sunday & Monday

Tires received at these facilities are sent to a recycling facility.

State law limits the number of used and waste tires that can be hauled at one time without a valid and current waste and used tire hauler registration. The limit is nine (9) tires.

Residents can also dispose of up to four (4) passenger car and light truck tires through the Bulky Item Collection program. Please refer to the Bulky Item Collection section on the Refuse Collection section of this website.

Waste tire bin service is also available from Recology Yuba-Sutter and can be requested by calling (530) 743-6933.

Waste Tire Amnesty Coupon Program

Occasionally, the Regional Waste Management Authority distributes free tire disposal coupons through a state grant program. When this program is active Yuba and Sutter County residents can request a coupon for the free drop-off of up to 20 passenger car and light truck tires (for rims up to 22 inches in diameter) at either of the two transfer stations operated by Recology Yuba-Sutter. The drop-off locations are the Marysville Transfer Station at 3001 North Levee Road in Marysville and the Ponderosa Transfer Station on Ponderosa Way in Brownsville. All of the tires received at these facilities are sent to a recycling facility.

Coupons will be issued for up to 20 tires on a first come, first served basis while supplies last. Coupons will expire 30 days from the date of issue and a valid coupon must be presented when the waste tires are delivered to the drop-off location. The program is open only to Yuba and Sutter County residents with a limit of 20 tires per address. Proof of residency may be required at the time of delivery.

Call the Regional Waste Management Authority weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at (530) 634-6890 to request a coupon or for more information. Please be prepared when you call to provide the number of tires that you have for disposal.
